Hey all!

We're less then a month prior to the World Championships, and I've been a bad panda, and haven't finalized the formats that the WC is going to use.

We have the current qualified players:

  • Pat Eshghy ~ Origins  Revolution Champion (Tommy Dreamer)
  • Kevin Peters ~ All Axxess Champion  (Paul Heyman)
  • Zack Barner ~ Gen Con Revolution Champion (Jeff Hardy)
  • Dom DeMarco ~ All Axxess Champion (Rey Mysterio)
  • Matt Stoneham ~ Canadian Champion
  • Guy Jones ~ UK Champion (Undertaker)
  • Luis Navas ~ (Bobby Heenan/ R-Rey Mysterio)
  • Rumi ~Regining World Champion
That's 8 players. There are an additional 9 slots available.

That's a potential 17 players. Unless someone steps up and requests a regional qualifier to happen between Aug 1 & Aug 10, those are the only seats that are going to be available for the world championships.

Realistically, I'm not expecting Luis, Rumi, or Guy to be in attendance. So we're looking at 14 players.

With that number of players, we only need 5 rounds of swiss.

Do we need to see the following formats represented in the championship?:

All Axxess
Afterburn
Classic - AA
Classic - AB
Revo

Then the top 4 looks like this:

Classic AA
Revo
Game 3 if needed - Afterburn

Finals:
All Axxess
Revo
Classic Afterburn.

Also, do we even want to worry about diversity at that point?

I'm not sold that it has to be this way, and I'd love to hear suggestions/alternate viewpoints.

I don't know about how to determine who gets to play in any open spots (if we even bother having anyone play in those open spots, a 12-15 person Worlds is definitely possible), but here's an idea for the tournament itself:

WORLDS ITSELF

5 rounds of Swiss, from the tournament types that are represented in the course of the weekend.

All Axxess
Afterburn
Revolution
Raw Deal Classic
Texas Tornado (!)/Velocity

(if there can be a qualifier for it, it should be included in Worlds ... personally, I like TT better than Velocity because more creative decks can be made with that format and because of the fact that we already have three limited-cardpool formats in Classic, Afterburn, and Revolution formats)

The order of the formats will, of course, be selected randomly.

Top 4: Present players with 5 index cards. Each of those cards will have the name of one format. Each player picks one card that he does NOT want to play for that match. The remaining three will be the formats played. The order of the formats played, on the other hand, will be selected randomly.

Finals: best of five. One game, each format. Order of formats played to be selected randomly.

I'm agreeing with Goth. I like this way a lot, actually. It's organized and I think it would be very successful. I like what Andre was saying in regards to have TT instead of Velocity. The format is a lot of fun..especially seeing all the different combo's of superstars and stuff.

When will we know the OFFICIAL formats for worlds for people to start preparing and all?

I'd like to have it finalized by the end of the week.

I'm leaning toward Tornado Tag over Velocity, because my spider sense tells me to worry about some debacle over some card on the banned card list.

Chris Jericho

Sounds good, man. Either way it's a win/win situation. The whole weekend will be mad fun.

What will happen if people who are already qualified for "worlds" don't show up? Will we just have people who have fun the qualifier(s) and what not take their spots..or how will that one work, bro?

Velocity hasn't seen extensive playtesting yet, so I agree that it's a good idea to see how the Velocity qualifier does then wait for next year to put "Velocity" in the WC's itself.

With Tornado Tag, I seem to come up with a new idea every week. lol
Still, I'm looking forward to worlds this year...

Err... hopefully this makes sense:

1) I want at least 12 players in the worlds.
2) I don't expect us to have more then 16 in the worlds.

That being said:
A) If someone who has already qualified for the worlds, wins a qualifier, the "qualifier seat" will slide down the tournament bracket until we reach a player who has not already qualified for the worlds.
SO... if 1st & 2nd have already qualified, 3rd & 4th will play off to see who gets the seat.
(Slide down the tournament placing chart as needed.) Each tournament at Gencon will yield at least 1 seat at the championships table.

B) There must be an even number of players present (cause byes suck)
If there is an odd number of players present Sunday morning, all players who placed 2nd but have not qualified will be placed in a hat. We will draw names from the hat until said name drawn is present.

C) If there is only 9 players present, we will draw 3 names.

D) In the event that ALL 2nd place players have qualified, we then (and only then) will move onto all 3rd place non-qualified players.

That Guy

Sounds like a plan, and I'm another player who prefers TT over V, just because seeing non "tier 1" characters being played rules, considering that most of them are banned.

Has anyone thought of POSSIBLY switching the Revo format part of worlds with Velocity? Seeing as how Revo kinda crippled the game?

I really don't see how that would be fair to guy who qualified BY winning a Revolution tournament.  Also, this isn't the 'beat the dead horse' thread, let's do that somewhere else, okay?  :)

Love it or hate it, Revolution is part of the game.

It's present in All Axxess, It's present in Afterburn.

We've agreed that RDC should be present, Revo Should be present as well.

If the top 4 doesn't want to deal with it, they obviously don't have to.

It is what it is. We've kept it to only one Revo Qualifier. We were asked for more.

There are some folks who like it, and want to play it.

If no-one shows up to play Revo this year, then we know to scrap it going forward.

Hate to be a stickler about it...and if I seem pushy about it, my bad..but just wondering, because it's the end of the week if there is any word on the formats for worlds? Any help would be appreciated.

No-one has said boo... so We'll go with Dre's suggestion:

AA
AB
Revo
Classic
Tornado

Top 4: Present players with 5 index cards. Each of those cards will have the name of one format. Each player picks one card that he does NOT want to play for that match. The remaining three will be the formats played. The order of the formats played, on the other hand, will be selected randomly.

I'll do up a pretty post on the front page.

Tornado tag? WTF is that?

I have never played a game of TT.

Right now I'm 50/50 on playing. I will be at GenCon, but seeing Tornado tag on the menu has me laughing.

Worlds should be AA, AB, Revo. Those are the formats of qualifiers 2007. If people want to play in any of the qualifiers to get their ticket to worlds, fine.

Something to consider. Worlds is on Sunday. How long will it last? 1-2am is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. When will it start? 10am or noon?

I am qualified for Worlds. These decisions will decide if I bother playing.

Tornado Tag. see the Rules forum for the stickied post. I was hoping you'd be able to make it this year, but I guess any excuse is as good as another.

Dre

Haha, there you go, Ric.

Free spots for everyone else.

Which reminds me. I have everything decided. Except All Axxess. I need an idea as to how to play my wondrous Ax Kicks. Maybe I'll go with LotP or someone so I can play like 12304789 each game. Oh, and all decks are broken. Except Velocity. That one's only mildly broken. Pat gets the broken deck for that format.

Well Kev, thanks for waiting until AFTER the official announcement was made to female dog. I really appreciate that you've been on the forums, posting elsewhere, but couldn't take the time to share your opinion when we were asking for it.

Deck Lists for all 5 decks are expected prior to 10am Sunday. (If you want to PM them to me on here in advance, I won't say no.)

We will be running tight 30 minute rounds. (Yes, 30 minutes) If you can't win in that time, it's a double loss.

Round 1 starts 10:00 AM Sunday.
Round 2 Starts 10:40 AM Sunday
Round 3 Starts 11:20 AM Sunday
Round 4 Starts 12:00 PM Sunday
Round 5 Starts 12:40 Sunday

(Top 4 & Top 2 gets 40 minute rounds)

Top 4 Round 1 Starts 13:00
Top 4 Round 2 Starts 13:45
Top 4 Round 3 Starts 14:30 (If Necessary)

Finals Start at either 14:30 or 15:15

I am adding one additional rule: If we have 12 or less people show up for the Championships, the amount of Swiss rounds will be cut to 4.

If players are more then 5 minutes late for a round, they will eat a loss for that round.

KevinPeters

Not so much a female dog, as a bewilderment.

Before the soon coming Gen Con there hasn't been a wide variety of different formats for qualifiers. That is fine.

I just saying my first experience of Tornado tag games will be at Worlds, most likely.

No excuses being made. I haven't played RD since Feb. 2 games vs. my own decks. So since Origins 2007 I have no tourney level games to my credit. I won't embarass myself with a half assed showing at Worlds.

So you say play RD. Easier said than done. No one plays here and nobody has their cards anymore. Sad really.

In a tournament level environment, I'd say this will be true for the rest of us as well. Tornado Tag, as well as the new "Velocity" format are fairly open ended at this point. No way to say what will and won't be viable at this point.

That's how it was for me in the 9 months leading up to DragonCon in '06. Playing 4-5 games every 2 or 3 months against decks that i made and/or tuned up myself. It'll be okay, dude. It's not like we're 7 sets behind, right? I'm sure you'll come up with something.

QuoteSo you say play RD. Easier said than done. No one plays here and nobody has their cards anymore. Sad really.

Meh. What's sad is that seems to be holding true everywhere, not just in your area. *sigh*

But as far as Tornado Tag goes... you could always pick one of your best decks, throw another superstar in, and just tweak the deck as if it's a "permanent + free" "x is In My Corner" card.

We're all rusty. Who has consistently played top tier Raw Deal as we knew it two years ago.

It'll be interesting, and if nothing else, it'll be fun. That's why we're playing right?

I don't believe anyone who you have to worry about losing to has ever played a single game of Tornado Tag or Velocity.

And everyone's rusty, I know I haven't looked at Raw Deal in quite some months.
