Why is the background of the pdf's black vs. white?

When Staples prints the PDFs for me, they sometimes mis-cut the borders of the cards by a mm or so.

The background is black so that if the cards are slightly mis-cut the extended border will also be black.

If you're having them printed at a shop, use 12 pt glossy with a significant brightness adjustment.
