Owner of the Washington Capitals Ted Leonsis has been a strong owner for the Washington Captials.

Last night after Joel Ward scored the OT winner, and knocked the Bruins out of the playoffs, the racists came "out of the woods" and started posting profane hate speech that I'm not going to dignify by republishing it here.

Leonsis responded on his personal blog here:

QuoteShame on these folks who decided to take to their keyboards and show their ignorance and their racism and hate.
What these people have said and done is unforgivable. I hope they are now publicly identified and pay a huge price for their beliefs. There should be zero tolerance for this kind of hate mongering. Their messages should now stay glued into the algorithms to place a forever warning and a mark upon these people and their actions. They shouldn't be able to escape their keystrokes.
We will as an organization support Joel Ward. He has been a great teammate and a great citizen. He is now the star of stars in our city for his heroics last night. He is a friend and a fantastic player – who delivered – as advertised for us and our fans in the playoffs.

'nuff said?

The Internet allows cowards to feel brave, Internet morals is something parents need to teach their children.

I think Dilbert and I need to reconsider our "Ten Best Owners" list now.

Hockey is sadly still considered by some to be for white people, even there are more black players having larger roles for NHL teams; Subban, Kane, Simmonds, etc. Earlier this NHL season, a racist douche threw a banana at Flyers' Wayne Simmonds during an exhibition game at London, ON.

Still, there is racism in every pro sports. Remember the whole Jeremy Lin phenomenon and the racism backlash, intentional or not, right after from media and certain celebrities?

Racism continues to exist because every little incident gets blown into a huge deal. Dumbasses see this and use it for their 15 minutes of infamy. The other part of this is that dumbass fans that are not really racist do and say things that are "easy shots" at opposing players because they are uncreative and mistakenly think they are being funny.

If I can ask you Piper.........what should be done in that case? If you stay silent on things like this, then people that do it and share that mindset will believe their garbage is acceptable and continue to do it.

It's not an easy thing to combat really. Either you make it a big deal and make it blatantly clear to even the biggest mouth-breathing moron that it's not acceptable, or you stay silent and in the process allow those morons to believe their actions are acceptable. Neither option is really optimal, but what else can you do?

Force the people to wear the tweets as their signature on Twitter for a year so everyone can see what an effed-up racist they are. Make their actions have consequences.

You take away their 15 minutes.  If you are an administrator on a private site, you delete their posts. The rest of the time you simply avoid giving them the attention they crave by ignoring them. Most importantly you teach your own children/students/athletes how to behave. It's not right to be racist or even act racist, but people have rights to do so. Even though a huge majority despise this behavior, we can only educate and not force better behavior.

Not to spam links, but Racism is just another form of bullying.

And with that... I present Extra Creditz commentary on harassment:
