Karen Owen - My new hero? NSFW?
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:41:43 AM »
If you're not familiar with it, former Duke Student Karen Owen compiled a report on the guys she slept with, emailed it to a few friends, and then it went viral from there. Now the world is going OMG! A woman had sex!

Here is a link to the 42 page powerpoint presentation causing all the hub-bub.

So many guys never get honest feedback about their performance. And here is someone doing a public service explaining to these guys how to improve.

For that, I think she may be my new hero.

Can you imagine what would happen if a guy did this? Gotta love the double standard.

If a guy did this, nothing would happen, and it would just be another "Frat boy joke."

I saw in one place where she has been described as "the most hated woman in America."

Most press I've seen has been slamming her. Personally I don't feel that it's fair, so I decided to post accordingly.

This sort of thing is really nothing new (except that she did it in a power-point format.)  Women talk to each other about these sort of things.  When there are girls nights, the subject about how amazing so-and-so was  and how yadda yadda couldn't back up his talk with his action.  (I assumed men did to.)  How can this make her the most hated woman in America?  Some people are real prudes.

I've only gotten half way through it, my iPhone seems to cut out the cons lines at the bottom. Maybe that's why she is coming off as fairly positive to me. I'm not a fan of a lifestyle that has that many hook ups or has a lack of commitment, but she doesn't pretend to be something she isn't and that impresses me.  I like her for her memory to detail which is something that I wish more people had. I'll finish reading after work.

I think the real problem is that she violated the standard of hiding the subjects' identities.  The writing also seems more like a personal journal then it does a scholarly work.

Still, it does remind me of Tricia Jones from Mallrats.

I'm sure it was a joke for her friends based off Mallrats and not really a thesis.

my exact thought was "she saw Mallrats and went for it."

after reading the whole thing, I feel bad for all involved.  Maybe I'm too old school, but where is the romance? the communication? The desire to enjoy a whole person rather than just use them to satisfy their own urges?  I understand that sometimes people need to act out primaly, but this young woman, and some of her subjects will have a difficult time finding a meaningful relationship.  While I like much of her personality, her lack of commitment most likely spills over into her friendships and family life as well.

...or its just a college thing, lol.

I mean, I get where you're coming from.  The idea of just shacking up and maybe you call or maybe you don't.. doesn't really have any attraction.  Eh.

Now that it's gone viral, it can never be just a college thing. Future relationships will know about the past in more detail than they care to. A high percentage of men will be immediately turned off of pursuing a meaningful relationship with her, when someone does they are destined to feel compared to the list of subjects and face possible insecurities. Someday she may decide that she wants a deeper emotional attachment during sex and may not be capable due to this. I'm willing to bet that she was not well liked on campus by most other women, and that the circle of guys she ran with considered her a joke and a means for personal gratification (just like they were to her). A few guys probably were legitimately hurt pre-viral. The most important questions now are: When will the movie come out (and I mean legit Hollywood not Porno) and Who will play Karen?

LOL  I meant in general, not her specifically.  One of those 'everyone's doing it' environments, where casual sex among people at the local hangouts isn't looked upon negatively, but blown off as just 'a college thing'.

Kind of like how a gal might tell you she's not interested in other women, but she did try something with a girl in college...

I don't think anyone here was looking for a relationship as most of her subjects were drunken hook-ups.  When the time comes that she wants a more meaningful relationship, I don't think this will be as much a problem.  It'll be looked at a time in her life when she was "young and crazy."  She comes across like a groupie to these athletes, so I'm sure that there are more in her position, they're writings just aren't out yet.  I'm sure every college male college athlete knows the Karen type (minus the power-point thing.)  Whether they want to pursue that sort of thing is on them.

And I completely agree with you on the movie thing.  Whether they actually use Karen's story, or the general idea, there'll be a movie about this.

I think the problem here is that she didn't keep their identity a secret, and without previous informing them of their status as test subjects and the existense of this work i would say this could be considered grounds for a lawsuit on terms of privacy.

Then again, i'm not from Canada or the USA, so i live by a completly diferent ''logic''. Said that, i have to agree with the fact that if people are hating her, is because they need something to hate. I don't mean to sound offensive, but it has come to my understanding that most people from North America (including Canada and Mexico) just ''jump in the bandwagon'' without making a self-formed opinion of the subject. Then again, this is the case in most countries with massive advertisement and media coverage.

Anyway, back on subject, the girl effed up (no pun intended). Sure, it's a funny joke, and where i her teacher i would have accepted the work since it IS research. Yet, the whole identity thing is a big mistake.
