Mixed Martial Arts Card Game
« on: August 22, 2015, 11:43:57 PM »
MMA Combat Card Game,
2 players Mixed Martial Arts card game, Ages 12+ , 10 to 20 minutes playing time

Calling all interested playtesters:

Calvin Patten and I would like to get some feedback on our game. It's a two-player Mixed Martial Arts card game that's been 4+ years in the making.

Check out our rulebook here: http://www.mmaccg.com/mmaccgrules.pdf
(The rulebook is designed to be printed double sided on a 7"x10" page that folds up to fit in a cardbox.)

You can also download one of our Print & Play decks here: (You'll need two of them.)
http://www.mmaccg.com/TheGatekeeper.pdf
http://www.mmaccg.com/TapOutArtist.pdf
http://www.mmaccg.com/MuayThaiSpecialist.pdf

Remember, any feedback is greatly appreciated. Even if you don't think you'll have a chance to play the game for a while, please submit some feedback on the clarity of the rulebook.

Please note the graphics in the print & play deck listed above aren't final, although the general layout won't change.

Additional materials needed for setup and play:
Aside from the print and play files, and the rulebook there are no other materials required other than a paper and writing instrument to keep track of fighter Toughness. Two six sided dice come in handy to keep track of the game state using one of the rules tip cards included in the "Demo Deck" print & play above (Fight Position and which Turn and Round it is.)

Any questions please drop them here and I'll gladly clarify.

Thanks to some feedback received here via PM, I've updated the rulebook to include Deckbuilding Rules as follows:

DECK CUSTOMIZATION
After you've played a few games with the starter decks, you may want to build your own deck. When customizing decks, you must always abide by the following rules:
  • Your Stamina Deck must contain exactly 50 cards.
  • Your Routine Deck may contain up to 5 cards.
  • You cannot have more than 3 copies of any non-unique card in your decks.
  • You cannot have more than 1 copy of any Unique card in your decks.

Thanks! Please keep the feedback coming, preferably here in the thread so others can see any Q&A.

Cool man! i'll try it on Lackey  :D
Btw about the images, will you use just "indy" pics? i mean not UFC/Pride, etc, cause that would be cool :P

Edit: How do you overturn cards in the lackey plugin? i couldn't find any option for that, except dragging the card manually xD

Under the main menu's "Edit Preferences", there's an option to bind a key to "Overturn_Card" I think.  Put the cursor in the box and perform the key combination and there you go.
Time Zone: EST
Available Lackey Hours: late nights (8-9 PM starts), some weekend evenings or morning.

100% reason to remember the name.

There are a couple of options on that menu, as Draw_a_Card, etc., but there isn't one for overturning :/

I really like the concept and the rules are really easy to understand. Nice job on the rulebook! Will try it soon. One question though: any possibility of creating a toughness counter/ something to indicate?

No current plans to use UFC/Bellator/Pride or any of the other larger MMA labels in images just yet, not unless the game blows up in popularity and we can afford licensing. Final images will hopefully be from pictures taken during actual fights as they happened, some amateur and some pro. It'll be awesome looking, I promise!

I fixed the download. If you would like to try downloading the zip and reinstalling please do. I had an underscore in the text of one of the files where I needed a space. Also, if you've already created a custom deck and don't want to lose it, you may want to unzip the folder and just copy the "plugininfo.txt" file to the /lackeyccg/plugins/mmaccg/ folder, overwriting the old one. That way you won't lose any of your deck files or save game files. Here's the link again just to keep you from having to scroll up:

For real life playing, I've considered adding a stretch goal to the Kickstarter of a spin-down counter, possibly in the shape of a centerpiece of a title belt. Otherwise, just pen and paper, or another similar Magic life counter is easily used, since Toughness doesn't go over 30.

I'll be printing this out soon to try it out! Love to see a mma ccg. Will there be character cards or are you representing yourself in the game?

No current plans for character cards, although we can't rule out the possibility of that in the future. For now, you are the fighter, and using the Routine cards, you can customize your preferred fighting styles and/or abilities.

Also, I wanted to let anyone know if you're up for a game on LackeyCCG tonight, I'll be online. Just pm me here (I'll get an email update on my phone) and I'll be glad to play a game or two with you, or even spectate a few games and answer any rules questions that may come up!

I remember looking at this when it was in early production. Still looks solid, but I HATE the term "exile" in this game. It's just cribbing a term from Magic and has no flavor or connection to MMA. Isn't there a more stylistically-appropriate term?

I've thought about that, and try as I might just couldn't come up with anything thematic.

Edit: Could use "Hide" or "Hidden Zone" to reference Exile and Exiled cards?

I'm absolutely open to ideas, though.

In fact, I've got plenty of "Routine Cards" that could use some real card names.

Just a note. I've updated the plugin once more.

EDIT: Plugin is currently being updated with new Routine Card names and images. I'll repost the link to it soon! EDIT

Here are some of the changes made:

Added "Flip Card" to make it where you can flip Routine cards over before dragging them to the table, then once everyone has chosen the routine cards, players can reveal them.

Also added the "tap and untap" feature to cards so you can double click on them to remind your opponent of card effects.

Added an additional Routine card that was accidentally left off of the card database:

Distracted by the Ring Girls
Unique Routine
Players draw 1 less card during any Recovery phase.

Updated the second deck, "StarterDeck2". It now contains Takedowns so if both you and your opponent are playing the same deck you can actually get the fight grounded!

Added a third deck, which was the first decklist I ever put together for playtesting. Give "The Bard" a try. It's got some of everything in it, hence the name.

Tips for playing on Lackey.

As mentioned above, if using Routine cards just choose which routine cards you want to play, flip them, then drag them to the table. Once both players have chosen three, you can flip them to reveal.

Also, if you use the "Pass the turn" feature it will reset the fighter position back to Standing. I prefer to use the "Player 1" and "Player 2" turn counters to keep track of which turn it is in the round. If you do use the "Pass Turn" feature, just remember to keep an eye on the Fighter Position. I had to use the "phase" feature of Lackey to make it work due to the unique turn structure of the game.

Special thanks to Nick0 for helping me test out the plugin, and for the feedback on the decks and plugin features itself! Also thanks to Nate (Daeva) for inadvertently helping me realize I was missing a Routine card in the database!

Maybe banned zone or Ilegal zone or something like that, just like the moves that are prohibited in MMA.

Exiled = Locker Room or Showers. No, skip showers, that could reflect poorly in some circles.

Nate also recommended, "Exhaust" or "Exhausted" in lieu of exile.

I'll post another thread later this evening with proposed card names and other stuff for feedback. Perhaps a separate thread for MMA on Lackey?

I'm actually in the process of updating the plugin, including images right now. I'll post a new MMA on Lackey thread once it's done.

We updated some game terminology, "exile" is now "Exhaust", and I'm having to update quite a few images and the card database. Expect it to be complete in a couple of hours if we're lucky, but by noon tomoorrow (Eastern Standard Time - Sunday) at the latest.

Added a couple of Print and Play decks to try out, complete with routine cards. If you get a chance, please give me some feedback.

LackeyCCG plugin will be updated later this week.
