Virtual Raw Deal / Revisions for 2021

It's that time again!  Here is the list of 2021 Revisions, these are effective immediately.  (Mitch says he'll get OCTGN updated as soon as possible.)

Classic Raw Deal / The 15th Annual TCO Online Raw Deal Royal Rumble

Keeping the tradition alive, all credit to Neil Swint for designing and maintaining the rules, and continuing the yearly tradition for so long! It's an honor to fill in for him, thank you Neil! 

NOTE: Roster will be posted 1pm EST / 10am PST on Wednesday the 20th. Rumble results will be posted on Sunday the 31st.

YOU the players just have to pick some wrestler names (and maybe some power-ups), THEN DO NOTHING BUT SIT BACK, while I play out the 15th Annual TCO ROYAL RUMBLE! Since you won't be controlling things this is where reading the Royal Rumble match posting becomes very exciting and fun.

HOW TO SELECT YOUR WRESTLERS
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING carefully, as it will explain the EASY wrestler selection process that you MUST ADHERE TO.
YOU MAY SPEND UP TO 15 POINTS. You MUST select 1-3 wrestlers. After you have selected your wrestlers, if you have any points left you may spend the remainder of your points on the power-ups listed below the roster.
Sign up will be closed as soon as 30 WRESTLERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED BY ANY NUMBER OF PLAYERS. Any other players that end up trying to join in will unfortunately be cut off. DO NOT SELECT WRESTLERS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN SELECTED BY SOMEONE ELSE AND DO NOT SELECT A 31ST WRESTLER! It is your job to look over and correct your choices if need be, otherwise I will and you might not like it.


BRIEF GAME MECHANICS OVERVIEW (you don't need to know any of this, the link below leads to full Rumble mechanics)

Wrestlers will be posted with 2 numbers, #/#. The first # is their hand size (HS), and the second # is their superstar value (SV).
- A wrestler's SV is determines how easy it is to hit and avoid being hit by other wrestlers. The higher the better!
- The higher the HS, the more damage a wrestler can take before having to make a save roll. Failed save rolls result in elimination.
- A HS 0-4 wrestler removes 1 hit from themselves at the end of each round, and have a slightly easier time with save rolls.
- A HS 5 wrestler can reroll all their dice once each round.
- HS 8+ wrestlers are a tank or very skilled athlete, and have a small chance to avoid making a save roll.
- Recoveries can happen, causing hits to be removed and/or Reroll Counters gained.
- Low SV wrestlers and/or HS 0-4 wrestlers have a better chance at recovering.
- HS 11+ wrestlers cannot reroll their Recovery Rolls.
- HS 0-1 wrestlers begin with 2 Reroll Counters. HS 3/6/9 wrestlers begin with 1 Reroll Counter.



TCO ROYAL RUMBLE ROSTER
You are allowed to spend UP TO 15 POINTS and you must select 1-3 wrestlers. Wrestlers with a legit injury, that make occasional appearances, and that have been inactive for 30+ days have been omitted from the roster. Or have they?
ADDITIONAL RULES
Frantic Finale: When 28 wrestlers have been eliminated, if there is a lowest SV between the two remaining wrestlers, the lowest SV wrestler hits at 5+ for the remainder of the Royal Rumble!
Factions: Some wrestlers belong to factions as listed below in the roster. A wrestler belonging to a specific faction cannot attack wrestlers of the same faction unless there are no other wrestlers to currently attack.

You can buy each power-up as many times as you want, points allowing. When you buy a power-up you MUST immediately allocate it onto one of your wrestlers.

#PTS: REROLL COUNTERS
#PTS spent (minimum of 1) gives this wrestler #+1 reroll counters. If this wrestler is a cruiserweight and 3PTS or more are spent, +1 becomes +2.

1PT: CARDIO KING (can only be allocated to a HS 3-10 wrestler)
This wrestler removes 2 hits from themselves if their RECOVERY ROLL sum is negative. (Cumulative with RING GENERAL)

2PTS: 205 (allocated to all your cruiserweights, you can only buy this once)
When your cruiserweight attacks normally, if they would hit only on 6, they hit at 5+ instead.
This wrestler removes 1 hit from themselves if their RECOVERY ROLL sum is negative.

2PTS: DESTINY
Do not underestimate your chances of being eliminated automatically. Anything CAN and WILL happen in the Royal Rumble!
When this wrestler is automatically eliminated, one of these power-ups can be immediately removed from this wrestler. If removed, this wrestler is no longer being eliminated and is immediately moved to the start or the end of the ring and is declared DOWN BUT NOT OUT.

2PTS: TEAM PLAYER (allocated to all your wrestlers, you can only buy this once)
Your double team declaration roll succeeds at 3+ and each subsequent roll that round at 2+.
Your wrestlers can automatically double team with your other adjacent wrestlers. No declaration roll is made.
Your opponent(s) cannot use your wrestlers in a double team against your other wrestlers.
Your wrestler may skip their turn (decline to attack) and remove 1 hit from themself if the only attackable targets are your other wrestlers.

3PTS: READY TO RUMBLE
When this wrestler is eliminated (not automatically), one of these power-ups can be immediately removed from this wrestler. If removed, this wrestler is no longer being eliminated and is immediately moved to the start or the end of the ring and is declared DOWN BUT NOT OUT. This wrestler immediately rolls 1D6 that cannot be rerolled. If 5-6 is rolled then this wrestler gains a READY TO RUMBLE power-up!

3PTS: RING GENERAL (cannot be allocated to a cruiserweight)
Whenever this wrestler tries to Empty the Ring, the attempt succeeds on a roll of 2+ instead of 3+.
This wrestler removes 1 hit from themselves if their RECOVERY ROLL sum is negative.
This wrestler gains 1 reroll counter if they roll a BOTCH/SHOOT and they may reroll such a roll. (Even against HS 6-7.)

4PTS: LUCK OF THE DRAW (you can only buy this power-up ONCE)
This wrestler will enter the Royal Rumble in either the number 1 or number 30 spot. It's a 50-50 chance!

4PTS: RUMBLE ROYALTY (cannot be allocated to a cruiserweight)
When this wrestler is eliminated in ANYWAY, one of these power-ups can be immediately removed from this wrestler. If removed, this wrestler is no longer being eliminated and is immediately moved to the start or the end of the ring or to any hole within the ring and MAY be declared DOWN BUT NOT OUT.

When you would apply 8D- from your opponent's maneuver, you may instead RFG the top 4 cards of your Arsenal and end his turn. You can only move RFG cards with Superstar-specific effects.

Virtual Raw Deal / Revision Discussion for 2020

It's that time of year (well, 2 years, since we skipped 2019 haha)!

The list of planned revisions for this year are listed here, feel free to ask questions, bring up any typos or errors we might have made and overlooked, etc.  A lot of these are that kind of situation, minor tweaks and typos, little oversights that made cards not work as intended.  There's a few major changes, though:

* Old School Wrestling Match.  Yup.
* Hometown Hero - a small change to make this card more viable for Superstar's venues and save text in the future.
* Lawler's V1 Pre-match - the man could throw a punch back in the day, now he has some options in that direction
* Sheamus - he wasn't bad, just a hot mess of moving parts that was confusing and didn't 'feel' like Sheamus. He should be more streamlined, and definitely expect some support cards that may raise the bar a bit.
* Eve - lost in the shuffle of 40 Superstars in one set (Ryback: "STUPID!"), her design was too cautious and left her very weak. The adjustments to her ability and upcoming support should make her at least decent, if not competitive.
* Power levels lowered - a few Superstars that seem to be a bit above the grade were toned down, such as Kevin Owens and Texas Rattlesnake. To keep them still competitive but closer to the power levels of other Superstars, only very minor adjustments were made.
* Chain / PRS - to rein in the NPEs of complete hand-destruction, a Shenanigans tweak will give another option when you're under 4 cards in hand.
* Stun the Crowd - on the other end of the spectrum, 3 copies of this card is not as unrealistic as when it was released over 15 years ago, and the hand swing from this + printed SV + other effects like No Escape are overkill. Making StC Active should balance out its usage.

Virtual Raw Deal / Wacky Deck Ideas

I've thought about making a thread to just celebrate old deck designs from yesterday, and thought it might be fun to do it here (so it's not lost in the random discussion and topics of Discord).

The first one I was thinking about recently was my "Evil Russian" deck. The joke started because Big Show's Survivor Series 2 superstar card was that he looked Russian to my playgroup. Around that time, It Pays to be Evil came out, and building around it was fun. Usually, though, all the rest of the named cards had some use, but no one was using this card:

Remove Corner Turnbuckle
Mid-match Action / Reversal: Special: Heel
As an action, you may place any card with the words "touch turnbuckle" in the title in your opponent's Ring area into his Ringside pile and end your turn.
As a reversal, can reverse any card with the words "touch turnbuckle" in the title, and end opponent's turn.
When this card is in your Ring area, any player must overturn the top 5 cards from his Arsenal into his Ringside pile whenever the card titled Throw Into the Corner Turnbuckle is successfully played against him. Then place this card in your Ringside pile.

So the concept of the deck was to Taunt for It Pays to be Evil (I don't recall if there was a way to get it back if the random discard caught it, though).  Some of the other actions helped get the initial move through, and if it went all the way through, I'd drop a Remove and end my turn. Big Show had a solid reversal base, which helped keep the games under control, while ripping off 3 turnbuckle covers.

Then came the Throw into the Corner, which caused a 15 card overturn (since DTTAH wasn't invented yet), often followed up with the irreversible Big Show Splash (9D + 6D from Throw), for a total of 30 potential cards overturned!

I didn't play the deck very competitively, but it won more often than it lost, and that wacky Evil Russian was a blast to play.

Virtual Raw Deal / The Cutting Room Floor

Hi guys!

Since I've had Raw Deal on the brain lately, I thought it might be fun to review some of the cards and ideas that didn't make it into the game.  Back in the Comic Images days, this could happen because the Superstar was no longer with the company, or because WWE didn't approve the card title / concept / picture / whatever.  But in Virtual there were usually other reasons entirely for deciding not to use some of the concepts.

As the title seems especially timely, I'll start with this one:


We All Wear Masks...
Pre-match Event
Cannot be packed by Eugene, JBL, Raw Guest Host, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Tag Teams or Stables.  Cannot be blanked.
When packing this card, your Frankie Takes Ho-llywood is Unique; when this card is in your Ring, that card does not take up a Pre-match slot in your Ring and it is Permanent.
Before each of your Draw Segments, put up to 3 cards under this card into your Backlash.
ACE: During your turn, name a Raw Deal Superstar, and then put 4 random cards from your Backlash under this card and you count as the named superstar instead until the start of your next turn.

The idea started easy enough, what if those little perks on cards could be added by just spoofing the name of your Superstar? Even without gaining any traits, just the name, several ideas came to mind. One use would be changing your name to get those Movie card 'cannot be reversed' perks. Another might be naming your Superstar Mae Young for discounts on Sloppy...Very Sloppy. There's also a number of Superstars with remakes or tag teams where certain perks aren't available, but could be if they snuck in with a fake nametag.

Design-wise, the idea was a hefty cost that could be recouped but not easily, so this effect couldn't be used every turn. I don't recall why the Frankie idea was co-opted in, whether that's a concept with adding to a future card is out of my hands now, heh.

To be clear, this card didn't even see much playtesting, as multiple issues sprang up immediately. For one, several Superstars could evade the critical Shenanigans debuffs by using the Raw Deal equivalent of 'fake mustache and glasses' - Hello, My Name is NOT Eugene, please eat copious amounts of reversal damage, haha. (I don't recall why Raw Guest Host was on the list, but it made sense at the time)

Often the reality of 'fun idea' just doesn't work in game as expansive as Raw Deal, but it's an amusing thought. Perhaps this concept could be used as a Superstar-specific idea, locked down with the necessary restrictions on the Superstar Card, but it has a high potential for abuse, and is unlikely to be worth the trouble of extensive playtesting necessary.

Virtual Raw Deal / May 19!

So I'm curious... I had wanted to make a card for a long time, because the whole angle was stuck in my head (and had some hilarious uses, like Shawn Michaels egging on Kane to destroy his opponent more aggressively). Then the Mid-match Storyline idea came to mind, and fit the concept of changing an angle DURING the match rather than before it.



From a design POV - it felt like BFM could use the most help, as he's basically a one-shot kinda guy, and doesn't have much to offer if his initial moves are reversed or removed. Working in the 5/19 reference was tricky, but having a high cost to play the card - but conditional ring placement - seemed fitting. It can still be playable straight up as a difficult card to reverse, limiting the scope to 'reverse any Unique' or 'Mid-match card', and giving a payoff to those Virtual 'non-maneuver' reversals.

Boosting the underplayed maneuvers may not be helpful, as they can be janky without the May 19 boost, but it seemed like an okay idea to make them potentially more playable. And of course, since the point of the May 19 angle was to promote See No Evil, there had to be a tie-in. Letting BFM get the full 'Kane' bonus all the time seemed a bit much, so it was conditional instead.

Has anyone tried this card out, and how did it work for you?

Several older, long-unused sections have been archived to make it easier to get to what people actually used.  If they fall into favor again, we can always move them back for easier access.

So a couple months back, I found my new passion - making music. I'd thought about it for years, but didn't think I would be someone who could actually be a musician, between the money to buy equipment etc, and having enough talent. Turns out I'm doing okay so far, and will keep going in that direction.

I finished my first track, using the amazing vocals of a singer based out of L.A., and worked with some killer samples to build the rest of it up underneath. For those who are interested, here's the link:

Virtual Raw Deal / The B-Sides: V9B Released!

Yeesh, that took forever.... haha.  Well, here it is, the end of an era, leading to a new one.  Virtual 9 is finally wrapped up, though with a lighter volume than originally anticipated. 

But we wanted to wrap things up and move on, so a lot of the 'missing' Superstar support that wasn't finished (Drew McIntyre, Roman Reigns, Ambrose farewell card, The Bar) will show up down the road.  Some things were ready because they were planned from the start (Jinder's cards, for example) or because they were 'shiny objects' that drew everyone's attention (Becky's I Am The Man or the new Club card).  It'd be great if there were more than 40 new cards, sorry about that.  It should be better in the future.

So here's the link to the full Virtual 9 set list, and the files are all in place and Ready for Downloading.  As noted elsewhere, the Lackey patch has been updated, and <surprise!> I've already loaded the Superstar Guides, so let me know if I missed anything.  (Flickr will get updated soon, probably in the next 24 hours, for anyone who still cares about it, haha)

Virtual Raw Deal / Time for a Change

Over the last 12 years, I've had some weeks or months where I lost interest in Raw Deal, then found it again.  However, with college and moving, and dealing with some other personal issues, that desire just hasn't been coming back.  There is still some interest in keeping Virtual going, though, and it seems the person who is most actively working to keep the game alive is Eric RD.

We've talked in the past about it, and I've decided that my lack of interest means I'm no longer the right guy to run this crazy project of ours.  So I've talked to Eric, and he's going to take the lead of Virtual Raw Deal now.  I will, of course, still be around.  We're already discussing how to get Virtual 9B finished up and released, and what comes next to work on getting new content developed, playtested, and released.

Beginning with Virtual 10, Eric will be handling things, with some 'new blood' assisting in development.  He can provide more detail, but his plan is smaller sets more often, which will likely be well-received by the players, I suspect.

I'll still be around, just more as a navigator than a pilot.  Here's to Raw Deal living on!  <raises a toast>

General Chat / [NO SPOILERS] Avengers: Endgame

First and foremost, no spoilers, please!

That said - WOW.  How do you give even more accolades to a film that managed to live up to the standards of 20+ movies before it, connect them together, and aim even higher than before?  Just... incredible.  Awesome.  Amazing.  Wow.

Couple quick notes, because it's very late and this is a very long movie, clocking in just over 3 hours (though it didn't feel like it!).  There are NO mid- or post-credit scenes.  There is a 'sound' at the end, but it's not a reveal or anything, more of a callback.  For those ready to beat the traffic, you're not missing anything if you bail when the credits roll and Google it, heh.

Also, these aren't really spoilers, but I'll pass along these points in the movie as points where a quick run to the restroom won't miss much.

* When the Hulk eats lunch
* When the title card says 'NEW JERSEY'

I only really had two issues with the movie, the first is too mired in spoiler territory to discuss here, but the second is simple.  What now?

Much like adding more Harry Potter, they've built around the Infinity Stones and Thanos for so long, it's difficult to see where they go from here.  Maybe the Fox acquisition will lead to an X-Universe coming to the MCU as the next 'big thing'?  Hard to say.

Anyway, highest recommendation for Endgame.  It checks all the boxes, truly fantastic film.

HELL yes!  Marvel Studios finally has a new film out, and it was worth the wait.  I give it a solid A, bordering on A+.  My complaints are very minimal (and spoiler-ish, except - why was Sagat fighting Bison on DHALSIM'S stage? haha) but this was a lot of fun, mysterious, full of continuity, action-packed... everything I could ask for.  AND even explained a few things in the MCU.

There's a great mid-credits scene, the post-credits scene is just humorous.  And the opening logo is an awesome tribute to Stan Lee.  Definitely recommended!

...now just have to wait 7 more weeks to Endgame...   ;D

The wait is almost over!  30 days from today on Christmas Day, we'll release Virtual 9, the 'A section' (new Superstars and a few additional cards).  There might be some other presents under the tree as well, heh...

To build toward that, I'll be revealing one card (maybe more) from the new set.  No requests taken, sorry.
