Virtual Raw Deal / May 19!
« on: May 19, 2020, 10:27:38 AM »
So I'm curious... I had wanted to make a card for a long time, because the whole angle was stuck in my head (and had some hilarious uses, like Shawn Michaels egging on Kane to destroy his opponent more aggressively). Then the Mid-match Storyline idea came to mind, and fit the concept of changing an angle DURING the match rather than before it.

From a design POV - it felt like BFM could use the most help, as he's basically a one-shot kinda guy, and doesn't have much to offer if his initial moves are reversed or removed. Working in the 5/19 reference was tricky, but having a high cost to play the card - but conditional ring placement - seemed fitting. It can still be playable straight up as a difficult card to reverse, limiting the scope to 'reverse any Unique' or 'Mid-match card', and giving a payoff to those Virtual 'non-maneuver' reversals.

Boosting the underplayed maneuvers may not be helpful, as they can be janky without the May 19 boost, but it seemed like an okay idea to make them potentially more playable. And of course, since the point of the May 19 angle was to promote See No Evil, there had to be a tie-in. Letting BFM get the full 'Kane' bonus all the time seemed a bit much, so it was conditional instead.

Has anyone tried this card out, and how did it work for you?

Any other wacky cards from Virtual that appealed enough to build around (whether or not it was successful)?

Nice! I love those kind of interactions at shows like this.

My favorite streamer bit from when I was going to PWG with Buddha Dudley was Kevin Steen's final show. We streamered the hell outta him, he actually walked into it, then rolled around on the mat to gather up more, and stood back up looking like some living creature made of streamers, haha.

Plan is to revise it, letting the Rhodes Bros have it was an oversight.

I'm guessing you mean classic, and not Revolution Sabu.  :)

By the way, it's helpful to share why you've found them to be lacking, what they aren't doing, etc. It helps look at the weak points, and identify room for specific improvement. (Not singling you out, ESGR, just speaking generally)  :)

Good to see input, there's some surprising names on here though. Sometimes I think the Superstar just isn't being utilized properly, or perhaps it's a meta thing. Granted, it can also be a game evolution where they were great in say 2010, but not in 2020. Funny how things change...

I get the Brock comparison, though sometimes I wonder if that Backstage is STILL too good, heh. But there'll always be Superstars who do one job really well, and others that do some of that job while also doing other stuff. If you want to direct route, sure, but with as many Superstars as we have now, there's room for others who do A decently but also have B and C.  Granted, if even after the revamp, Dean Malenko still doesn't have that B and C factors, then perhaps we didn't scale him up enough.  (Sadly, he's a hard one to support, since WCW pics are hard to come by, and his run in WWE was brief)

Someone I had an interest in fixing before the transition was Sheamus - he's not necessarily bad, just low-powered (with the debuff on Mean Gene) and overly complex. My proposal was to restructure how he works while giving him a boost, though this would mean revising about half of his cards. (This would also make it easier to set up The Bar as a Faction support, similar to Bludgeon Brothers)

What do you guys think about revising Sheamus as suggested?

General Chat / Re: Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker [No spoilers, but a RANT]
« on: December 20, 2019, 05:26:08 PM »
I had the polar opposite experience, and enjoyed all of it.  It felt like the kind of big, epic movie I go to theaters hoping to see.

The story felt like the natural arc progression from 7 & 8, I found the character development to be rather rich, and the dialogue was good and at the right times, made me laugh. The transitions between scenes felt the same as any other SW movie, the sliding shift to a new area. There were some excellent callbacks to previous moments and characters, and things that made me gasp and 'mark' a bit.

Visually, it's incredible as they found new ways to present the old environments (desert, forest, etc) and some new locations, like a massive ocean with enormous waves.

Perhaps I just don't understand why people watch movies sometimes, it feels like they want to see the negative parts, and forget that entertainment is for the purpose of being entertained. (Note - that's a statement in general, not at you personally Ironteeth, the internet is full of examples, heh)  That's why I go to the theater, sometimes yes, it feels a bit lacking, and potential wasn't reached - however, Rise of Skywalker felt like it surpassed the potential, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again in the near future.

Classic Raw Deal / Re: Raw Deal Classic Tournament banned list?
« on: December 15, 2019, 05:47:04 PM »
I mentioned this when asked in PM, but I'll repeat what Eric said.  Officially:
There was no active ban list during the heyday of the game except for Fans Love an Underdog briefly until Fortitude Surge was released in Mania.

Raw Deal, when in print, prided itself on not having banned cards, but printing counters in sets to deal with things.  That might not have always been the best solution, granted, so we tried to be more surgical with our meta changes in the Shenanigans cards in Virtual.

Rules Forum / Re: RFG cards public knowledge? Or semi public?
« on: November 28, 2019, 10:32:46 AM »
To add, the only areas that are NOT public knowledge are your Arsenal, your Backlash, and your hand.  The Ring, Ringside, Backstage Area, and cards removed from the game are all public.  (I think that's all of them!)

I don't have the time of energy to wade through the wall of text, but spreading misinformation is not welcome on this site.

Pre-match and Backstage cards are clearly two different things, in the rules and visibly so.  Anyone saying otherwise is not being honest, and personal attacks are still not welcome here.

Rules answer given, my apologies to those who spent time on responses, but I'd prefer not to have anyone come along and have to read through that nonsense thinking there's some truth or other viewpoint there.

Thanks to those who spent time trying to clarify, though, I appreciate you.  :)

Lock (again)  :)

Possibly for part of it, but they also monitor CPU usage, as in 'how much computing is necessary to generate the pages?'  We got our first warning in a long time last month, likely from the new set dropping (thankfully we still came in under our allotment, or they'd have shut the site off for the rest of the month).

Hopefully no one's automatically updating the site anymore, there's no need for that, but there's still a lot of casual visitors it seems.  (Maybe bots too, who knows)

That said, thank you for the help.  I don't know if anyone else uses Venmo, but thanks to Crasher I got that set up if anyone prefers that.  PayPal seems rather universally accepted, though.

Again, thanks for the donations, past and present, it's greatly appreciated!

Good news / bad news....

Bad first, I was planning a 3-month renew for now, but been very busy with my position at work changing, taking an online music course, being sick, and Gem having another knee surgery.  And it auto-renewed for 1 year, which wiped out my savings/overdraft protection.

Good news, two people made some nice donations that covers almost half of the cost, so I'm not overdrawn, but I'm out about $240 I wasn't planning to spend.  And of course, TCO is renewed for another year, so that's good, heh.

(The frustrating thing is, had I realized when they were processing payment, I'd have switched it to a credit card, but it was still set to bill my debit card.  Argh)

So any donations to help cover the cost would be greatly appreciated, especially that the vote has been cast for us to renew for a year, haha.

Eric pointed out we have a lot of old, unused topics, and TCO's forums could use a makeover. So they've been reorganized to focus on Raw Deal, first and foremost, with more of an eye toward promoting organized gameplay.

Several older, long-unused sections have been archived to make it easier to get to what people actually used.  If they fall into favor again, we can always move them back for easier access.

That's awesome, congrats!  I'll try to give a listen when I get off work tonight.

Hmm, perhaps there are some tricks I forgot to pass along.  I'll check on this as soon as I can.

Unfortunately, it's about that time again.  Renewal for the hosting company where this website lives will be at the end of November, and thankfully the prices listed in the first post are still the same.

There's a bit in the renewal fund already, but only about $50 so we still have a way to go.  Unfortunately, my funds are rather limited this time around (summer beats up my budget, living in the desert with high electric bills) so I won't have a lot available to cover the difference if we want to keep TCO alive.  But they're offering a 3-month renewal, so we have two options:

1) Donations get us to the 1-year mark and we renew in November.
2) We can renew for 3-months, and revisit this after the holidays in 2020.

Let me know what you guys think, it'd be great to keep TCO alive if we can!

While true, it doesn't change the type of interaction, so the ruling would be the same either way.

In fact, I'd request no further posts with any opinions or comments until Daeva's had time to weigh in, so the issue isn't clouded.  Thanks.

General Chat / My First Song
« on: October 06, 2019, 03:33:25 PM »
So a couple months back, I found my new passion - making music. I'd thought about it for years, but didn't think I would be someone who could actually be a musician, between the money to buy equipment etc, and having enough talent. Turns out I'm doing okay so far, and will keep going in that direction.

I finished my first track, using the amazing vocals of a singer based out of L.A., and worked with some killer samples to build the rest of it up underneath. For those who are interested, here's the link:

Hope you enjoy!

Historically, I've never seen anyone have success by relying on an unprotected non-Multi F:0 action since Volley This (and Return of Scotty's WORM) were added to the game.

Keep in mind they've been playtesting Gargano for a couple months, so while spoiler shock is to be expected, theory vs. practice makes a major difference.

Also, let's watch the insulting tones, okay? This isn't a trash-talking forum like some, we prefer to keep things chill and friendly. You're welcome to an opinion, but it's not necessary to disrespect the weeks of design and testing the team put into the creation of new Superstars.

Neither restriction is present, so it should work whenever.

(Note:  I'm like 92.7% sure on the PM part, but Daeva can confirm or deny)

No, the outside text will resolve first, then the text of COBRA that puts it into your Arsenal.  It won't be in the deck fast enough for Beware to go get it.

Effect:  a) move a Stipulation
b) either discard or move MbPH.

Please note the Rules Forum is for receiving answers from those who handle the rules of the game, opinions don't really fit here, though we thank you for the effort.

Back to the OP:  while not intended originally, as you point out, they're both revealing the card, so you would draw for both effects, yes.

Virtual Raw Deal / Re: Introducing Virtual 10: Breaking Ground

It's still early to say, but considering how the landscape has changed, Eric and I (and some others) plan to review the tournament scene going forward, taking regional tournaments into account, and discussing what really constitutes a 'World Championship'.

There's no answers now, obviously, since the conversation hasn't happened.  But once the details are laid out, we'll let everyone know.

(And by 'we' I really mean Eric, heh)
